WHAT  IS ADDICTION?

ADDICTION IS A DISEASE THAT AFFECTS FUNCTIONING OF THE BRAIN AND BODY DUE TO DRUGS BEING ABUSED.

THIS ENDS UP FORMING USERS TO BECOME PSYCHOLOGICAL AND/OR CHEMICALLY DEPENDENT ON DRUGS, DOING THEM EVEN WHEN IT HAS NEGATIVE OUTCOMES.

AND YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT, ADDICTION IS A DISEASE. NOT ONLY IS IT LISTED AS A DISEASE UNDER THE CENTERS OF DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION, BUT MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THE MEDICAL FIELD VIEW IT AND CATEGORIZE IT AS A DISEASE.

JUST LIKE OTHER DISEASES, LIKE CANCER OR DIABETES, IT IS CAUSED BY BEHAVIORAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND BIOLOGICAL FACTORS. ADDICTION CAN BE HEREDITARY JUST LIKE OTHER DISEASES ARE.

HOW DO YOU GET ADDICTED? HOW COME SOME PEOPLE GET ADDICTED AND OTHERS DON'T?

SOUNDS LIKE A DUMB QUESTION, IT SEEMS OBVIOUS TO MANY PEOPLE WHY AND HOW ADDICTION HAPPENS; THE PERSON IS DOING DRUGS. BUT IN THE LONG RUN THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT FACTORS THAT GO INTO BEING AN ADDICT.NOT EVERYBODY WHO USES DRUGS OR ALCOHOL GETS ADDICTED.

NOT EVERY PERSON THAT DOES DRUGS GETS ADDICTED. THERE'S 3 MAIN FACTORS THAT CAN MAKE THE CHANCES OF SOMEONE BECOMING AN ADDICT HIGHER.

BIOLOGY

The genes you're born with, like gender, ethnicity, and the presence of other mental disorders, accounts for half of someone's risk for addiction.

ENVIRONMENT

Influences that surround you also affects the likelihood of addiction, such as family and friends, economic status, peer pressure and parental guidance.

DEVELOPMENT

Most users start around their teenage and young adult years, where the brain is still developing. Specific areas still developing are in control of decision-making, judgment, and self-control.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND ADDICTION

ADDICTION ISN'T JUST MENTAL, IT ALSO PHYSICALLY LITERALLY CHANGES THE STRUCTURE OF YOUR BRAIN AFTER TIME.THIS HAPPENS BECAUSE OF THE WAY DRUGS AFFECT YOUR REWARD CIRCUIT. WHEN YOU USE DRUGS, IT FLUSHES THE AREA WITH LOTS OF DOPAMINE.

THE RUSH OF DOPAMINE CAUSES THE REINFORCEMENT OF UNHEALTHY BUT PLEASURABLE ACTIVITIES, WHICH IS WHAT LEADS PEOPLE TO REPEAT IT OVER AND OVER.

EVENTUALLY, THE BRAIN ADJUSTS TO THE EXCESS DOPAMINE COMING IN (FROM DRUGS) WHICH CAUSES YOUR RECEPTORS TO CREATE LESS DOPAMINE NATURALLY. THIS CAN BE PERMANENT DAMAGE.

THE CYCLE OF ADDICTION

JUST LIKE OTHER DISEASES, ADDICTION HAS MANY DIFFERENT STAGES / CYCLES IN THE DISEASE, LIKE INITIAL USE, TOLERANCE, DEPENDENCE, AND RELAPSE.

1. EARLY DRUG USE

5. PSYCHOLOGICALLY DEPENDENT

2. DRUG USE TURNS INTO ABUSE

6. CONSEQUENCES OF ACTIONS

3. BUILD A TOLERANCE

7. QUITTING / TRYING TO QUIT

4. CHEMICALLY DEPENDENT

8. RELAPSING
